How were these ranges built?

Every range on the four linked guides is built the same way, bottom-up: typical licensed-technician labor hours for the scenario, multiplied by a national wage band drawn from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program (SOC 49-9021, HVAC Mechanics and Installers), plus a typical parts or equipment cost range and a standard contractor margin. Regional energy cost context, where relevant, comes from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. None of it is scraped from a retailer, directory, or competitor site.

What actually drives HVAC cost variance nationally?

Repair versus full replacement. This is the single biggest swing across all four services — a component repair is mostly labor with a modest parts cost, while a full system replacement is dominated by equipment cost, which itself varies enormously by efficiency tier.

Labor wage bands by region. Equipment and parts price close to nationally; installed labor rates track regional wage data instead, which is why the Northeast and West Coast metros run highest and the Midwest and South tend to sit closest to the national baseline.

Access to the equipment. A system in an attic, crawlspace, or on a roof takes longer to service than one in a basement, closet, or garage, across all four services equally.

It's a starting point, not a rule to apply blindly — a system under 10 years old with a single failed component is almost always worth repairing, while an aging system approaching a major component failure (a compressor, a heat exchanger, a reversing valve) is usually closer to the replacement side once efficiency losses from age are factored in.
